Why insight is not enough

Knowing why isn't always enough to change how you feel.

You might already know why you people-please, shut down during conflict, overthink everything, or feel like you always have to hold it together. You may have talked about these patterns in therapy before and understand exactly where they came from.

But understanding something and being able to change it are two different things.

We believe healing means making room for all of you. Your thoughts and emotions matter, but so do your body, relationships, identity, lived experiences, and the larger world you're navigating.

The mind and body hold trauma together, and healing often requires working with both. Our therapists integrate EMDR, IFS, somatic therapies, and relational therapy to work with what insight alone hasn't been able to shift.

Therapy isn't about changing who you are. It's about helping you understand yourself more fully, heal what still hurts, and have more choice in how you move through your life.

Who we work with

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • Perfectionism & People-Pleasing

You put a lot of pressure on yourself to get things right and can spend a lot of energy anticipating what other people need or expect from you. Mistakes are hard to let go of.

  • Anxiety & Racing Thoughts

You spend a lot of time thinking ahead, replaying conversations, or worrying about things that might go wrong. It can be hard to actually relax, even when there isn't an immediate problem to solve.

  • Feeling Unseen

Earlier relationships may have left you feeling misunderstood, overlooked, or like your needs didn't matter. Those experiences can still affect how you relate to other people and what you expect from them.

  • Shame & Self-Worth

You can be pretty hard on yourself. Criticism sticks with you, and there may be a persistent sense that you should be doing better, handling things better, or somehow be further along than you are.

  • ADHD & Neurodivergence

Keeping up with everyday life takes more effort than people realize. Executive functioning, sensory overwhelm, burnout, masking, or feeling chronically behind can all be part of the picture.

  • Trauma & PTSD

Something happened that you haven't fully been able to move past. You may feel on guard, get overwhelmed quickly, shut down, avoid certain situations, or notice that your body reacts before you've had time to think.

Therapy approaches

Our Approach to Trauma Therapy

We use a mix of approaches to help you reconnect with yourself. Each one goes deeper than talk therapy alone, working directly with how your brain and body hold onto past experiences.

EMDR Therapy at Full Self Psychotherapy in Washington, DC

01 EMDR

EMDR Therapy

EMDR can help you work through traumatic experiences that continue to contribute to anxiety, even when you understand intellectually that you're no longer in the same situation. By processing those experiences, we can help shift the emotional and physical reactions that keep showing up in your everyday life.

Somatic Therapy at Full Self Psychotherapy in Washington, DC

02 Somatic

Somatic Therapy

Sometimes you know there's nothing to worry about, but your body is still reacting like there is. Somatic therapy helps you work with the physical side of trauma and anxiety: the tension, restlessness, racing heart, or feeling of being constantly on alert, so your body can begin to respond differently, too.

Internal Family Systems at Full Self Psychotherapy in Washington, DC

03 IFS

Internal Family Systems

IFS can help you get curious about the parts of you that worry, overthink, prepare for the worst, or feel responsible for keeping everything under control. Instead of fighting those parts of yourself, we work to understand what they're trying to protect you from, including old hurts and trauma, and help them take on less extreme roles.

Therapy Intensives at Full Self Psychotherapy in Washington, DC

04 Intensives

Therapy Intensives

Therapy intensives can be a game changer. Instead of stopping after 45 minutes, we can work together for 90 minutes, several hours, a full day, or even multiple days. That gives us time to really get into the work and stay there, using EMDR, IFS, and somatic therapy without having to stop just as something important is happening. For many clients, that means going deeper and seeing change more quickly than they have in traditional weekly therapy.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Trauma Therapy

Questions we hear often, answered directly. If you do not see what you are looking for, reach out and we would be glad to talk.

What is trauma therapy, and how is it different from regular talk therapy?

Trauma therapy is a type of psychotherapy designed specifically to help people process and heal from distressing events that continue to affect daily life. Unlike general talk therapy, which focuses on understanding thoughts and feelings in the present, trauma therapy uses specialized methods like EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy that work directly with how traumatic memories are stored in the brain and body. These approaches help people move through trauma at a pace that feels manageable, rather than re-living it in ways that can feel overwhelming.

What types of trauma do you treat at Full Self Psychotherapy?

We work with a wide range of trauma experiences, including childhood trauma, complex PTSD (C-PTSD), single-incident trauma such as accidents, medical events, or assault, relational trauma, and developmental trauma that shaped early patterns of thinking or relating. We also work with clients navigating anxiety, burnout, ADHD, and life transitions that have roots in earlier experiences. If you are unsure whether what you experienced qualifies as trauma, that uncertainty itself is worth exploring.

What is EMDR therapy, and does it work for trauma?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that uses bilateral stimulation, typically guided eye movements or gentle tapping, while a client briefly focuses on a distressing memory. This process helps the brain reprocess stored traumatic memories so they lose their emotional charge. EMDR is one of the most extensively researched trauma treatments available and is recommended by the World Health Organization and the American Psychological Association for PTSD.

What is Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy?

IFS is based on the idea that we all have different parts inside us, like the perfectionist, the inner critic, or the anxious part, that influence how we think, feel, and act. These parts often mean well but can leave us feeling stuck or overwhelmed. IFS helps you get to know these parts, understand their roles, and heal the deeper wounds they might be protecting. The goal is more self-compassion, emotional balance, and a stronger connection to your authentic self.

How long does trauma therapy take to work?

The length of therapy depends on your needs and goals. Some people make progress quickly, while others choose longer-term work for deeper, lasting change. Almost every client we have worked with has felt some relief after the first session, whether from feeling truly heard or sensing that change is on the way. We will regularly check in to make sure our approach is working for you. If you are looking for faster progress, we offer therapy intensives.

Do you offer therapy for ADHD?

Yes. We work with clients for whom ADHD and trauma intersect, which is more common than many people realize. Trauma can produce symptoms that closely resemble ADHD, including difficulty concentrating, emotional dysregulation, and impulsivity. Our therapists are experienced in working with this overlap using approaches like IFS and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy that address both nervous system regulation and the relational patterns that often develop alongside ADHD.

What are Therapy Intensives, and are they right for me?

Therapy Intensives are extended therapy sessions, typically 3 to 6 hours in a single day or spread across consecutive days, designed to create deeper, faster progress than a standard weekly session allows. They are particularly well-suited for clients who have already done some therapeutic work and want to move through a specific trauma or stuck pattern more efficiently, clients with limited availability for weekly appointments, or clients traveling from outside the DC area.

Do you offer online therapy for clients in Virginia and Maryland?

Yes. We offer virtual therapy sessions for clients located in Virginia and Maryland, as well as in-person sessions at our Washington, DC office near Dupont Circle. Telehealth sessions use the same evidence-based approaches as in-person therapy, including EMDR and IFS, and many clients find it just as effective.

How do we get started?

Getting started is simple. Reach out to us or book directly through our online booking page to schedule a free 20-minute consultation. This is a chance for you and your therapist to connect, talk about what you are looking for, and see if we are a good fit. If you decide to move forward, your first session can be either in person at our Dupont Circle office or virtual through a secure platform.
